What is a humidifier?

A humidifier is a household appliance designed to increase the humidity inside the room, which can be used to humidify a designated room, or connected to a boiler or central air conditioning system to humidify an entire building. Based on the theory of heat and moisture exchange, the humidifiers are composed of the two types below in practical engineering:

  1. Equal enthalpy humidifier: It is used for evaporation and humidification by means of absorbing the sensible heat in the air with water, of which the change on the psychrometric chart is an approximate isenthalpic process. (increase in humidity and decrease in temperature); the ultrasonic humidifiers falls into the category of isenthalpic humidifier.
  2. Isothermal humidifier: It is designed to convert liquid water into steam that is mixed with air for humidification by means of heat energy, of which the change on the psychrometric chart is an approximate isothermal process. (The humidity increases but the temperature remains unchanged).

The humidifiers can be divided into three major categories, namely industrial humidifiers, commercial humidifiers and household humidifiers.

Is a humidifier detrimental to human bodies?

The risk of humidifiers lies in the humidity content in the air after use, and excessive humidity can result in adverse impact on your body. The indoor air can be humidified by sprinkling water, placing water basins, etc., but the most convenient way is to activated the humidifier.

When the humidifier is in service, it must be cleaned on a regular basis; otherwise, the microorganisms such as mold in the humidifier will come into the air with the mist and then enter the respiratory tract of people, which will easily lead to humidifier-related pneumonia. Moreover, as for the humidity in the air, it is not the higher the better. In winter, the human body feels more comfortable when the humidity is about 50%. If the humidity in the air is too high, people will feel chest tightness and difficulty in breathing, so it is advisable to realize moderate humidification.

What are the benefits of humidifiers?

  1. Proper humidification in the living room can effectively prevent the wooden furniture from being deformed and the walls just painted from getting cracked;
  2. Spare you the trouble of tears by powering on the humidifier when cutting onions;
  3. Reduce indoor dust and static electricity.
